The Cinema Theatre Association organises visits to cinemas and theatres, past and present, across the UK and overseas. Lectures and other events also feature in our programme of activities. These are usually for members only, so why not join us?

SOUTH BANK SPLENDOURS

In this fully illustrated presentation, CTA member Bryan Eckersley will tell the unique story of cinema theatre on London's South Bank, from the Festival of Britain's Telekinema to the enduring National Film Theatre (now BFI Southbank).
THE MALTA STORY
Sunday 20th - Friday 25th May 2012
During this week-long visit, the many cinema sites on the beautiful islands of Malta and Gozo will be explored. There will also be time for sightseeing and relaxation!

EASTERN PROMISES SLIDE SHOW (December 2011)
An evening of of slides taken during the CTA's recent ground-breaking trip to India and Bangladesh.
A DOUBLE BILL: MUSWELL HILL AND EAST FINCHLEY (October 2011)
A morning visit to the Odeon, Muswell Hill (which was celebrating its 75th anniversary) was followed by an illustrated lecture, ''The Changing Faces of Cinemas', at the Phoenix, East Finchley.
A TYNESIDE PILGRIMAGE (October 2011)
This weekend excursion included visits to the recently refurbished and extended Tyneside cinema, the Theatre Royal, currently being refurbished, and the 1867 Tyne Theatre in addition to many former cinemas in Wallsend, North Shields and Whitley Bay.
H AND X CERTIFICATE! (August 2011)
This three day visit to West Yorkshire centred around the cinemas and theatres of Halifax and Huddersfield.
LOST THEATRES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC (September 2011)
CTA member Ian Hanson, making his first trip to the UK from his native Australia, presented this slide show about theatres and cinemas of Australia and New Zealand that are no longer with us. Ian is a founder member of the Australian Cinema & Theatre Society (Sydney) and the Cinema and Theatre Historical Society (Melbourne).
THIS IS TO CERTIFY... (June 2011)
During this very informative visit to the British Board of Film Classification, an experienced film examiner explained how the Board operates and the guidelines used when classifying films. The presentation took place in the Board's viewing theatre and included many illustrative clips.
A TALE OF TWO CITIES (April-May 2011)
During this nine day visit to Germany members explored the cinema and theatre heritage of Stuttgart and Munich.
A RETURN TO INDIA (February - March 2011)
Following the successful visit in 2005, "Return to India" took members ’South and East‘ to the three major filmmaking cities of Chennai (formerly Madras), Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and Dhaka (formerly Dacca). In addition to the usual cinemas, many other buildings of architectural interest were included in this exciting visit.
FROM FILM TO THE PROMS (March 2011)
During this special tour of the Royal Albert Hall (Grade I listed/opened in 1871) members viewed the backstage facilities and the Royal Retiring Room as well as the more well known public areas.
